New comments system
After renovating the site a few months ago I mentioned that I wasn’t sure how to implement the comments system, since the site is now totally static. After a lot of research and trying different solutions, I ended up using a selfhosted comments system called Remark42.
Learning, installing and configuring this system has taken me around one week due to the fact that I’ve changed VPS and I’ve had lots of problems for which I haven’t found solutions easily. But I finally got it up and running. I’ve also been able to convert and import the comments I had on my old site… although it’s weird that the most recent comments are already a decade old.
One good thing about this system is that you don’t need to create a new account. I’ve set it up so that you can log in with an existing Google, Microsoft or GitHub account. I would have added Twitter as well, but it requires paying $100 a month…
Possible downsides and drawbacks are that who knows if the development of this system will end up abandoned, as has happened to many others. If that happens and I have to migrate the comments to another site, I will probably have to find a way to convert them to the new format on my own. Another possible problem is that I don’t know how it will be in terms of spam.
But well, we’ll have to wait and see how it works out.
